Senior Wellness Visits
As your pet becomes older, Marshfield Veterinary Service has developed a health monitoring system to promote health and prevent disease. Proper care includes: annual wellness exams, vaccinations, parasite control, dental examinations and cleanings, regular exercise, and good nutrition. For all pets older than 7 years of age, we recommend a senior or mature diet that is highly digestible, high in protein and fiber, and also contain antioxidants and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for skin and haircoat health.
A recommended Senior Wellness Visit may include:
- Wellness Exam
- Vaccinations
- Fecal check
- Bloodwork (Complete Blood Count, Chemistry, and Thyroid hormone level)- this screens major organ systems like the liver and kidneys for disease.
- Blood Pressure/EKG- just like humans, animals can become hyper or hypotensive as they age. Medication is sometimes warranted.
- Intra-ocular pressure- a small devise called a Tonopen is used to check for glaucoma in the eyes.
- Urinalysis- a urine sample can be the first indicator of kidney disease and urinary tract disease such as infections or stones.
- Chest Radiograph (1 view)- an x-ray can evaluate the lungs and heart for early disease.
